iPhone 4 iMovie Test

The new phone shoots some rather incredible video (download through Posterous to see the actual quality) but iMovie is pretty underwhelming to edit with - especially since you still need to sync to the computer to grab the full quality file.

Grr Rah Ug - Tricky cat to cat in the early days of the gym

Before the lab wall was resurfaced and the wall railing and extra ledge were added in I got the idea to try this horrendous cat to cat. It's a wider than 90 degree angle to a small 2x4 ledge and was the first really annoying challenge that took more than one day to get. Like most video I have it's been waiting around to be edited for awhile - enjoy.

Roof gap videos

Did three jumps, really not that much of a problem after I was
absolutely sure I could hit the target. Same spot each time :)

Testing out something new

Built a long cadence course at open gym to test out something new, still needs to be tweaked a bit before posting about it. Fun course though, really hard to get perfect!

Three rather scary jumps

The setup:

The jumps:

Each jump had a different scary element. The first goes diagonally to a railing 6'+ above the ground, the second you have to stay really low to not hit the I-beam, and the third was 12.5 of my feet long with about a 3' drop - big jump. Took awhile to build the courage for each but turned out to be not that bad. Will have to retry the jump at UW to see if my standing jump with a drop has really improved that much.

The next is from the lounge back down to the railing...which I am not looking forward to :( Still really wary of down railing precisions.

New balance and dash accomplishments

Ran some tests of things I've been working on for a long time at Gasworks during Rafe's birthday jam. My flexibility is slowly improving making more of these things possible that I'm really excited about. On the thick railing I was able to get decent:

  • one foot controlled dash outs (both sides)
  • two foot controlled dash outs (finally!)
  • stopping a dash vault in L-hold
  • standing up from a sit with no hands (finally! both sides)
  • outside leg lazying out of a sit controlled (both sides)
  • and a start on balanced running.

Scary shit tic tac

Testing out the new camera lenses with this really scary reverse double tic tac thing. Took me quite a while to get as you're entering into it blind, spinning, then hopefully grabbing what you need. The fisheye is blurry as hell but the wideangle lens looks great! What do you think?

The safety technique for precision landings works!

I've been experimeting with this technique for awhile and put it to the test today on a tricky jumping course using the bar precision trainers.

The idea is that you land and allow yourself to not only go all the way down into a crouch but also put a hand down to the side. If you split your weight this allows a bit more strength control on your landing but the real benefit is that you can stick out the inbetween leg in front or in back for quite a lot of recovery, basically going directly into safety/step vault position.

It worked really well on a course I only did correctly without hands once. Surprisingly I found that I started jumping smarter too, possibly because it was easier to choose the target or I was able to relax more knowing I had more recovery room (I was try to imitate doing a bar to bar precision high up enough that you wouldn't want to come down). Made the series of four jumps four times in a row.

Front vault experimentation (and giant up double kong)

Working on getting lower on my dashes, need to increase my wrist flexibility I think. The two boxes were originally set up for kong to cat teaching, but someone mentioned a double kong and I figured I'd give it a shot.

We need a wideangle super simple to operate and dump camera for the gym, any suggestions?
